Mary Jo didn't really want to turn down a marriage proposal from her lover, Evan. But as someone aiming to be a politician, he needed a society wife. Evan’s mother made it clear that Mary Jo was unsuitable, so she made the painful decision to let him go. Three years later, Mary Jo approaches Evan for help—her father has been swindled out of money—and she starts to work for Evan to pay off the legal fees.
