First published in 1869, the novel is based on author Louisa May Alcott’s own life growing up during the US Civil War. This illustrated version of the classic brings this beloved family story to life. As their country was embroiled in war and their father was away on the battlefield times were difficult. Life was indeed hard and money was short, but the four sisters - beautiful Meg, tomboy Jo, kind and gentle Beth and affectionate Amy - decided to make that year’s Christmas a special holiday for their mother and family friends, and their unselfishness and generosity is rewarded. But for all the girls’ good efforts and charms we learn that each also has their own faults and problems.
